After a fling with Hollywood blockbusters, Guy Ritchie is returning to his favourite gangster stories. The director of the cult Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels has just created a series for Netflix.
The Gentlemen is a sequel to Ritchie’s film of the same name. The story of a thriving marijuana empire starred Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant and Colin Farrell, among others. Although they will not return for the Netflix series, viewers can expect many other attractions: clever criminals, sarcastic humour and surprising plot twists.

The Gentlemen plot
As mentioned, The Gentlemen is a spin-off series from Guy Ritchie’s 2020 movie. It tells a brand-new story with entirely different characters, but its core is the same: it’s a tale about a resilient drug empire and a bunch of witty criminals. However, this time, members of the British aristocracy have a larger role.
The Gentlemen is the story of Eddie Horniman, who has just inherited the title of Duke of Halstead and a tatty estate with a basement full of surprises that divert his life onto a whole new track.
As the series description goes:
The Gentlemen sees Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherit his father’s sizeable country estate – only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire. Moreover, a host of unsavoury characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation. Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.
