While parent company Oppo has a few foldables under its best, OnePlus waited until 2023 for its first attempt.
The OnePlus Open is a compelling debut, combining premium hardware with some genuinely impressive software features. But there’s still room for improvement in a few key areas – including the price.
Will any of these be addressed on the upcoming second generation, which is likely to be known as the OnePlus Open 2? Here’s everything we know at this stage.
When will the OnePlus Open 2 be released?
At the moment, there is no official information on the Open 2’s launch, or even if OnePlus is working on a new model. But it’d be a surprise to see the company give up after only one generation.
However, the global launch of the first OnePlus Open took place on 19 October 2023, and it’s possible OnePlus will settle into an annual update cycle.
Assuming OnePlus wants to keep up with the competition next year, in the form of the expected Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel Fold 2, it is possible that the Fold 2 will be unveiled around October 2024. However, that’s only speculation at this stage.
How much will the OnePlus Open 2 cost?
We do not have concrete information on the price of the OnePlus Fold 2, although we expect its price to remain competitive.
The One Plus Open is costs £1,599/$1,699, making it more affordable than key rivals in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 (from £1,748/$1,799.99) and the Google Pixel Fold (from £1,749/$1,799).
Hopefully, OnePlus will make the Open 2 even more affordable. But that might not be the case, especially if there are significant upgrades.

What specs and features will the OnePlus Open 2 have?
The OnePlus Open was only unveiled in October 2023, so there’s no news regarding its successor. However, the changes OnePlus has made to other models and rumours about the competition gives us some clues as to what to expect.
Design & displays
There is no denying that the cover display first Open is similar to the OnePlus 11. Assuming OnePlus will stick to such a design, we can expect the Open 2 to be based on with the upcoming OnePlus 12.
But of course, the Open 2 will unfold to reveal a larger internal display. It’s not clear how this might change next time around.
Performance
The OnePlus Open is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This was the latest at the time of launch, but it’s soon been replaced by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Assuming the Open 2 is released before the end of 2024, it’s likely to be powered by the 8 Gen 3.
This current model is also only available in one configuration (16GB/512GB) and we don’t expect this to change with the release of the Open 2, especially as it offers more RAM and storage than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Pixel Fold for a lower price. However, it would have been nice to see more storage options, for example in the form of an additional 1TB configuration.
Cameras
The OnePlus Open has five cameras: a 48Mp main, 64Mp 3x telephoto and 48Mp ultrawide on the back, plus 32Mp inner selfie and 20Mp cover selfie lenses.
There’s nothing to suggest its current collaboration with camera company Hasselblad will come to an end, but there’s no word on how the Open 2’s cameras might be different.

Battery & charging
The OnePlus Open is equipped with a 4805mAh battery, providing most users with a full day of usage under typical conditions. But you’ll struggle with more intensive usage, making battery life a key weakness.
It remains uncertain whether the battery capacity will be increased in the Open 2, but a move to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should boost battery life via its improved power efficiency.
The OnePlus Open features 67W fast charging, with the necessary charger is included in the box. It can charge up to 50% in just 15 minutes, reaching a full charge in less than 45 minutes. While not quite top-tier, this is decent, and doesn’t necessarily need to be improved.
It’d be nice to see wireless charging introduced – it was a notable missing feature on the original Open.
Software
The software the Open 2 runs will all depend on when it gets announced. If it’s before the end of 2024, Android 14 with the OxygenOS 14 skin is most likely.
But if we have to wait until 2025, it may run Android 15 out of the box instead.
All the current multitasking features available on the OnePlus Open are likely to make their way to the Open 2, and there may also be some new additions.
This is everything we have about next generation of the OnePlus foldable so far. Please stay tuned, as we will continue to update this article with more details.
